10-Minute Reading Program for Visual Learners

Is your child getting left behind in reading? I can show you how to teach your struggling child how to read in only ten minutes per day or less!

Yes, I know what you are thinking, "If my child is struggling with reading while at school full time, how can I possibly teach her/him to read in only ten minutes per day at home?"

Well it's true, and I'm going to tell you exactly how to do just that. My name is Denise MacDonald and I am the President and Founder of eReadingPro, the company that brings you the 10-minute Reading Program. For the past four years, I have been travelling the globe teaching parents and teachers how to teach children to read.

Let me tell you a bit about myself. As a result of my background in administering psycho-educational assessments with young children in the school system, II set out to make a difference. I co-created my first reading program (Out of the Box Reading) with a business partner who had a child with Down syndrome. I fell in love with that community and through spreading the word of the program, came to realize that the program worked extremely well with any child that was a visual learner. In fact, almost 65% of all children are visual learners and so the number of kids that need help is extensive. In 2008 I ventured out on my own creating other reading programs aimed at visual learners. These visual learners can be, but are not limited to, children with ADD/ADHD, Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, dyslexia, Down syndrome, Non-Verbal Learning Disability (NLD), or any child that does not learn in the traditional system.

Your visually-oriented child is losing the battle with phonics!

As a visual learner, readers tend to use the right side of their brain for reading rather than the left side. In doing so, words are remembered as pictures, rather than by way of the phonetic decoding methods that are used by the left side of the brain. Children who are visual learners tend to have weaker auditory processing skills along with weaker auditory memory. For these children, remembering how letters and sounds fit together to make up a word can be challenging. It is important for visual learners to see the whole word as a picture first, and then it is easier to remember how those letters and sounds fit together to make up that whole word/picture. As a result of these struggles, many children who are visual learners can fall behind in a classroom that uses predominantly phonetic decoding methods for teaching reading.

5 Reasons Why Your Child May Be Struggling With Reading

  1. The Dolch list of words

The Dolch list of words is the list of the most commonly used words in the English language. It consists of words such as 'that' and 'which'.
Children struggle with these words because there is no visual representation for them. As a result, children have a hard time making an association with the word.

  2. Phonics vs. whole-word approach

This is like asking the proverbial question of “Which came first - the
chicken or the egg.” Should you begin teaching letters and sounds (phonics) or whole words first? That depends on the child, doesn't it? Especially, if the child is a visual learner.

  3. Pictures and words on the same flashcard

    I
f you are a visual learner and someone shows you a card with a nice colorful picture AND a word on the same card, what are you most apt to look at – the picture or the word? I’m sure you said the picture. So why would we bother putting the word on the same card?

  4. Word families & similar looking words

As a visual learner, it is very confusing to see words that look very similar
and be able to figure out the differences. For example: hat cat mat sat. They all look very similar. This can be very confusing for a child that is a visual learner.

  5. Labeling items

Many think that labeling items around the house will help their child to learn to read.
By labeling items around your house you are also providing those words to them continually, but they are also becoming part of the ‘wallpaper’. After a while they are just ignored.

when a child cannot read, it's hard to say who suffers more, the parent or the child?

When your child is struggling with reading in the educational system, they can become embarrassed when they cannot perform as well as other children. Your child may even be ridiculed by other children causing them to withdraw. This withdrawal can turn into a dislike for school and even a withdrawal from society as a whole.

Parents, seeing that their children are struggling with reading, fear the negative interactions their children may face in the school system. They fear for their child's social status in a world where it is assumed that everyone can read. Lastly, they fear for their child's well being trying to navigate through a world of words. Isn't it time to stop living in fear?

Now there's hope...

We've created the Reading Program for the Visual Learner that we like to call the 10-Minute Reading Program...  for obvious reasons!

Our Reading Program for Visual Learners is the solution to all your child's reading problems. We have taken all the available research out there on teaching children to read who are visual learners using the "whole word approach" and assembled it in a very neat package. The key is systematic repetition and our unique "no brainer" scheduling technique that takes all the guesswork out for the parent or teacher. Best of all,  it takes no more than 10 minutes a day!

We use flashcards for systematic repetition

We introduce a small number of single words which your child will learn through the use of flashcards. We then repeat those single words with your child as we bring them back paired together in word couplets. Then we bring the single words back again in three word phrases. Finally, your child gets exposed to that single word a further time as we bring it back in a sentence. By the time your child sees one of the original single words in a sentence, they have seen it over 100 times. Now that's a lot of repetition and your child cannot help but recognize that word each time they see it and hear it!

Speech is improved too!

Through hearing the presenter (the parent or teacher) say the words aloud as they flash the cards, your child picks up the best annunciation of words that you can provide. Through our systematic repetition, your child is exposed to those spoken words again and again, and simply by mimicking your speech, they may begin to speak (if they are non-verbal) or their pronunciation of words can improve considerably!

with a ready-to-use presentation schedule, there's really nothing to think about!

When do I show the words in the program? How often do I show them? These questions are a thing of the past with the 10-Minute Reading Program. We've prepared a presentation schedule that shows you which words to show and on which day to show them. Scheduling a system of single words that return in couplets, phrases, and sentences can be a daunting task. Not to worry, we've done all the work for you. The10-Minute Reading Program is the only program out there that takes a child from reading a single word right up to inserting it in a sentence. We talk to people everywhere about programs that can teach your child to read single words, but that's it. They can read and recognize a lot of single words but it stops there. Our unique presentation schedule is the key to your success. Just follow the step-by-step schedule and you'll be well on your way to success in reading for your child.

don't forget the little booklets

Once your child learns a group of words all the way up to the sentence level, this is where we introduce images. Your child will enjoy creating little booklets using  the words that they have learned and have hours of fun reading them. Our images are unique to the imaginative and fun sentences that are built using the newly-learned words. It's wonderful to see your child paging through a book in which they know all the words. A real self-esteem builder!

Lets outline some of the benefits of our program:

  • Uses predominantly the Whole-Word Approach to teaching reading. Important for visual learners.
  • All vocabulary is provided.
  • Easy for parents OR educator to use & implement.
  • Can be used as early as age 2 but designed predominantly for grade-school-aged kids
  • 'Hands-on' & interactive.
  • Words and pictures on separate cards.
  • Uses large flashcards for visual impact.
  • Takes less than 10 minutes per day to implement.
  • A full presentation schedule is provided.
  • Provides everything needed for a full 14-month period.

Key issues to know about how this program compares to others:

  1. It does not use the Dolch list of words. The vocabulary consists of words that an individual can associate a visual representation of, and includes things within their 'world' (such as food, animals,  household items, etc.)
  2. It does not use 'word families' (such as hat, cat, sat, mat), as these words look too similar and are easily confused.
  3. It encourages use of very large flashcards printed in red ink, (rather than small cards with black ink) as that makes the flashcards highly visible and attracting to the eye.
  4. Words and pictures are never presented at the same time or on the same card.
  5. Only five to six flashcards are presented at each session.
  6. Flashcards are presented during a very structured and repetitive daily schedule.
  7. Children learn to recognize sight words, word meanings and word context, thus building comprehension and fluency.
  8. The program is highly recommended for parents wishing to teach their children to read at home!
  9. The program is highly recommended for use by educators working with struggling readers.
  10. Only 10-minutes per day is required to implement this program effectively.
  11. We offer parents and teachers support via email and telephone. Responses to your questions are answered quickly!

"I've been in the business of helping children and supporting parents and teachers for many years now. I know my way around the special needs community pretty well having travelled and presented workshops worldwide as well as presenting over 100 workshops in the US and Canada. I take my work very seriously and make every effort to reply to every email and telephone call personally and in a timely fashion. When I put my name on a product, you can be sure that I will back it 100%."

7.  Time Savings!

This is the last, but probably the most important bonus of all - this program saves you time

Time is a valuable commodity these days and we could all use a lot more of it. The normal expectation is that reading is taught in the school system, but when your child has special needs, the parents have to step in. This effort in the home TAKES TIME! If you are going to make that effort, make sure you're using the product that optimizes your time. How? By using the best program that takes the least amount of time. We call the Reading Program for Visual Learners, the 10-Minute Reading Program for a very good reason - because that's all it takes!
